The main options for Polish artisan sellers

Four platforms dominate the conversation among independent makers in Poland: Etsy, Allegro Lokalnie, WooCommerce (self-hosted), and Shopify. Each works differently, and the right choice depends heavily on what you sell, how many items you produce, and whether you want to handle marketing yourself.

Etsy

Etsy is the largest dedicated marketplace for handmade goods globally, with tens of millions of active buyers. For Polish sellers, it offers direct access to international markets — primarily the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, and France — without any local advertising spend. Etsy charges a listing fee of USD 0.20 per item (every four months), a 6.5% transaction fee on the sale price including shipping, and a payment processing fee that varies by country. Polish sellers using Etsy Payments pay a processing fee of around 4% + PLN 1.50 per transaction.

The main drawback is competition. Categories such as jewelry, ceramics, and textile goods contain hundreds of thousands of listings. New sellers often find that organic visibility takes months to build without Etsy Ads.

Allegro Lokalnie

Allegro Lokalnie is the classifieds-style section of Allegro, Poland's dominant e-commerce platform. It is suitable for sellers who want to reach Polish customers without shipping internationally. Listing on Allegro Lokalnie is free for most categories, though promoted listings and certain product types carry fees. The buyer base is domestic, which simplifies shipping and customer service.

Allegro Lokalnie does not carry the "handmade" branding that Etsy does — buyers there typically expect lower prices and faster delivery. Items that photograph well and fall in the PLN 30–200 range tend to sell most consistently on this platform.

WooCommerce (self-hosted)

WooCommerce is a free plugin for WordPress. Running your own store gives full control over branding, customer data, and pricing. There are no per-transaction marketplace fees beyond payment processor charges (e.g., Stripe charges 1.5% + €0.25 for European cards). The trade-off is that all traffic generation falls entirely on the seller — through SEO, social media, or paid advertising.

Self-hosted stores make sense when a seller has a recognizable brand and consistent sales volume that justifies the time investment in maintenance, hosting (typically EUR 5–15/month), and marketing.

Shopify

Shopify's entry plan starts at EUR 25/month (as of 2025 pricing). It simplifies many of the technical aspects of running a store compared to WooCommerce, but the monthly cost makes it harder to justify for sellers with low or seasonal sales volumes. Shopify does not charge additional transaction fees if you use Shopify Payments, which is available in Poland.

Note on VAT registration

Polish sellers who exceed the PLN 200,000 annual revenue threshold are required to register for VAT. Etsy and other platforms may display prices without VAT to international buyers, but Polish tax law still applies to the seller's income. The Polish Tax Authority (podatki.gov.pl) provides current guidance on VAT obligations for small traders.

Platform comparison overview

Platform Audience Fees Setup effort Best for
Etsy Global (US, UK, DE, FR heavy) 6.5% + listing fee + payment fee Low–medium Unique, gift-oriented items at EUR 15–80
Allegro Lokalnie Poland only Mostly free, promoted listings extra Low Domestic sales, lower price points
WooCommerce Your traffic only Hosting + payment processor fees High Established brands with repeat customers
Shopify Your traffic only EUR 25+/month + payment fees Medium Sellers wanting a managed hosted solution

Starting on multiple platforms

Many artisan sellers begin on Etsy for international reach while simultaneously listing on Allegro Lokalnie for domestic buyers. This diversifies exposure without requiring a large initial investment. The main challenge is keeping inventory counts consistent — selling the last piece of a one-of-a-kind item on one platform while it remains listed elsewhere can lead to overselling.

Simple inventory tracking through a shared spreadsheet or a free tool like Airtable helps manage this when volume is low. Once a seller reaches consistent monthly sales, dedicated multi-channel tools become worth evaluating.

What to check before listing

Before going live on any platform, it is worth confirming a few practical points:

  • Whether the items qualify as "handmade" under the platform's seller policies (Etsy has specific rules about production partners and manufactured items)
  • Whether the platform supports payment in PLN, and how currency conversion fees apply
  • What the return and dispute process looks like from a seller's perspective
  • Whether shipping costs are included in the listed price or charged separately, and how this affects your margin
Etsy's seller handbook — available at etsy.com/seller-handbook — is consistently updated and covers Polish-specific topics including tax reporting and shipping integrations.
